Bad Teeth...?

Ok, This is how the story goes.

When i was younger i got addicted to amphetamines (base, wizz etc etc) due to being a complete idiot back then.

The problem is, If anyone knows then this is useless to them, But something in the drug eats away at your teeth, So my teeth are no longer pure white as i wish they were.

Also, I was born with, Umm. Im not sure the exact wording for it, but basically the top jaw isnt wide enough which forces them to go crooked.

With both problems out there, Whats the best way to go about getting them looking decent. I have been to the dentist numerous times, and while they are great at shoving metal anywhere they find a little space, They dont help any towards what i really want.

So, What options do i have?

Reply:Most dentists are only interested in making your teeth ok, and not in cosmetic dentistry. If you want them to look fab, chances are you will have to go to a cosmetic dentist and pay.
Reply:is it a cleft pallette you have?

well, you dont need a dentist, you need a cosmetic dentist and an orthodontist, which can either be done privately or from referal from your dentist. its pricey, but if you find a good ortho ofcourse they can get them fixed for you with veneers and possibly a jaw or tooth realignment.

to add also, its good that you dont mind paying but its not going to be hundreds, its going to be thousands of pounds worth for private treatments for something like this. ouch!
Reply:The dentist could remove a tooth from either side of your mouth, allowing more room, followed by braces to realign your teeth.

After that, you could have veneers put on them to make them bright white. This would cost big $$$ (sorry, no pound sign) over here though...
Reply:Sounds like you have a major rebuilding programme ahead. 12 months of treatment, but a new smile at the end. Not easy at all. But if you can beat the addiction you can handle this, no worries. Stay on the straight-edge, brother
Reply:As for the crookedness your best best is probably braces! Since you are adult though it is probably best to go private for this treatment - although the NHS treats some adults for orthodontic treatment they treat only those with very severe problems. It does sound like you do have a severe problem with regards to their crookedness and thus you might be eligible - however since waiting lists for braces on the NHS for adults tends to be in the region of 2-4 years, if you have the money I would just go private. That%26#039;s what I did - I didn%26#039;t want to be waiting approximately 3 yeasrs. Being private you can refer yourself to any orthodontists. For a list of orthodontists in your area search the yellow pages. Furthermore orthodontic treamtment is not as expensive as some people think. My treatment is costing £2100! I paid a £600 deposit and then I pay £150 at each appointment (every 6-8 weeks). Most orthodontists also have payment plans where you can spread the cost over a longer period of time without any interest fees!

As for the whitening of your teeth to be honest (although I am not fully aware of the discolouration effects of amphetamines) I am pretty sure any form of whitening will not work in your case. Whitening only works for those with stains brought on by environmental factors such as smoking, eating foods and drinks that have staining effects (tea, coffee, tomato ketchup, curry and pasta sauces). It does not whiten teeth that have become discoloured as a result of changes in the colour of dentine. Which I think amphetamine use does. But check with a dentist first because as I have said I am not entirely sure if and how amphetamine use discolours teeth.

But to be honest are your teeth really that yellow? Compare them to friends teeths or family members. There is fast becoming a trend for people to think they have less than white teeth because they are comparing them to celebrities! This is not a good comaprison to make. Also crooked teeth can give off the illusion of being less white because of the way they reflect light - thus straightening them could make them appear whiter.

Another option for you is veneers and crowns - these can be applied to give you a straighter looking smile, and also they can be shaded any colour thus also giving you whiter teeth at the same time. However veneers and crowns do not last forever and need changing every 5 - 10 (for veneers) or 10 - 15 years (for crowns)! And therefore it can work out extremely expensive over the course of a lifetime, especially if you need a whole mouthful of them - which in your case it seems so. It is extemely evasive too: veneers and crowns involve removing a lot of enamel!

I would go with the orthodontic route!! But beware, to be eligible for orthodontic treatment your teeth need to be healthy (i.e. no cavities, or signs of severe gum disease).
