Help!!! Dog with really bad teeth!?

My 9 year old mongral has the worst teeth I have ever seen! a lot of them have fell out. They are in such a bad state. He is not in any pain, but his teeth are manky and his breath is fowl!





Would it be best to just leave them as they are or isd there any treatment I can use. Or would it be best to get them taken out?

Although not obviously painful, dental disease can be very harmful for your pet. Tartar build up on the teeth will lead to gingivitis. Bugs can then go into the blood stream and travel through your dog's body.





Those bacterias will usually stop in the kidneys, liver or even heart and trigger various problems which may only show years later.





Therefore dental hygiene is paramount to keeping your pet well and confortable for as long as possible. I recommend you consult your veterinarian. Should the dog need to have some teeth out (which sounds possible), this will have to be done under general anaesthetic.





You can request a "dental check" with a veterinary nurse. This may even be free of charge.

Reply:take your dog to the vet, they need to be removed if they are really bad, otherwise rotten teeth can cause all sorts of health problems for your dog (internally) and can lead to death.
Reply:A vet can clean them up nicely, but the dog will need to be put under for this. As far as what can YOU do, there's biscuits and chews made to help clean teeth. There's doggy toothbrushes and toothpase. I've also seen doggy breath mints.

Reply:It would be best to have a vet look at them. Just because he doesn't show he is pain doesn't mean he isn't. A tooth rotting to the point of falling out is VERY painful and you have just let him go through this.

Reply:You probably could have prevented your dog getting the bad teeth. You could have given him dentabone which helps with plarc and gingervitus and also helps to strengthen their teeth and gums. But its a bit too late now, you will have to take the dog to the vet to have the teeth extracted. But your vet will advise you what to do.

Reply:Probably best to go to your vet and have them cleaned and bad ones taken out, my dog Clint at the time he was 12 yrs old and had really bad teeth and breath that smelt like dead fish, we took him to the vets and had him put under anasthectic (sp) when he came back he was minus a few teeth, but he breath was better and cleaner teeth, just check with your vet about the weight to anathectic ratio just to put your mind at ease(i was phoning every ten mins just to make sure he was ok) as it was the first time he had been put under and due to his old age :D
Reply:since its 9 years old im not suprise , but if u really want the best for ya dog u can take it 2 the vet n get its teeth n gums all fixed up. or if u wanna do it the cheep way u can take some cotton wool as well as listerine n some water mix it up than dab ur dogs mouth wif it , works all the time . :D

Leaving teeth rotten in his mouth can cause periodontal disease and also kidney problems and also infections of the gums.


They may remove teeth or they may decide to do a cleaning. That is up to the vet.
Reply:If your teeth were rotten to the point of falling out, do you think you would not be in pain? He IS in pain, severe pain, and yes, you should get them treated. Your vet needs to put him under anesthesia, clean the teeth, assess each tooth's health, and remove the abscessed teeth.





And in future, please, pay more attention to your pets' oral health. Oral infection WILL kill an animal, the infection will spread to bone and through the blood to the heart and kidneys. It was the number 1 cause of death in PEOPLE before the advent of oral hygene and antibiotics.
Reply:i no wot you mean my do is the same his breath is fowl. and taking him to the vets dosnt help cos they just tell you wot yu alray no like try t brush his teeth but i is impossibe or try chews but they dont work!!!
Reply:i don't know if its passed this stage but try giving him denta stix. my dogs had 1 almost every day since ive had her and her teeth are fine. to be fair, definately take him to the vets to get checked out, dont leave them as he may be in pain with them soon and it will cost you more money in the end.maybe even try brushing his teeth with special dos toothpaste but be gentle. good luck
Reply:First let me say, that if his teeth are as bad as you say they are and he has already lost some, he's in alot of pain, Guaranteed, the same way we would be, if our teeth were like that. If it's not taken care of immediately, he can have many health problems. It can affect his heart, the infection and bacteria in his mouth, can get into their blood stream, which causes Sepsis and that's just to name a couple of serious problems that can happen. Both of these problems can be deadly ,if you wait too long.He really needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately, so he/she can determine whether they can be cleaned or whether they should be removed. PLEASE for the sake of your dog, this is very serious and you need to get her to a vet really soon! PLEASE, don't let her go through this pain, it's not fair.
Reply:take him to the vet and pay to have his teeth cleaned and a full dental. They will put him under for this. They will remove any teeth that are rotten. Im interested to know whether this dog is fed just meat as biscuits can help in keeping the dogs teeth clean. Try dental chews etc as they will help after the dog has had a trip to the vets. If you can't afford it, try and get in touch with the rspca..they may be able to help
Reply:if his teeth are as bad as you say, how have you let this happen, he will be in pain, its just dogs dont show pain the way we do, you must take him to the vets and I am afraid its going to cost you a lot of money, at 9 years old there is always a risk giving anesthetic and if his breath is as bad as you say he may well have gingivitis too, as previously answered bad teeth can kill, apart from giving him upset tums and playing hell with his immune system, please take him to the vet and get him treated or you may not have him much longer.

I'd certainly take him to the vet. S/He will be able to clean the teeth, remove any that are too far gone and advise on a regime.

After the vet visit:





There are canine toothbrushes/pastes on the market. I bought them for my dog. I perdonally found the brush difficult to use, and had far more success with one of my used toothbrushes. Use canine toothpaste as opposed to human toothpaste.





Alternatively there are various chews that help clean the teeth. These are not as effective as brushing, but a lot less hassle.
