I have really bad teeth... the enamel is soft... what can i do to not get cavities?
When you are a teenager with soft enamel you have more chances of getting cavities.

1- Limit your sugar intake. But if you do have sweets occasionally, brush and floss right away.

2- Eliminate soft drinks completely, even the diet ones.

3- Brush after each meal. Floss at least once a day.

4- Have regular checkups at the dentist, every six months, even every three months if your dentist recommends it.
Reply:I got "sealants" on my teeth when I was about your age or maybe younger, and it really helped with preventing cavities. It might be a little pricey, but it works really well. Ask your dentist.

Good luck to you!
Reply:Ask the dentist if you have Perodontial Diease, if not, i bet its the sugar you getting, if you get too much sugar. Don't get any more sugar. they will ruin your teeth,
Reply:drink milk, no soda, it will take effect after few years

don't floss too often,
Reply:Dont eat too much sugar. I think milk is good for your bones and i think teeth is part of your bones so drink more milk! xD But eh im just 12 what do i know.
Reply:Like Ronni71 said, sealants are wonderful..i had the dentist put them on my son's teeth, because mine are like yours. Another important thing is that i grind my teeth and it wears them away! I now have a night guard i wear every night because the one night i didnt i woke myself i was grinding them so hard i chipped the filling on the back of my front tooth. I would also recommend a night guard that the dentist fits you with. i had 12 cavities when i was your age, so i know how you feel. It sounds like you are doing the best you can. take care
Reply:There is a condition called "amelogenisis imperfecta" which means the teeth never completely form when they erupt. It must be treated early with aggressive methods to do for the teeth what they cannot do for themselves.

Picture being born with extremely thin skin...you'd have to protect your bones and organs from damage since your skin couldn't do the job.

Children who are born with this often have the kind of conditions you describe. The best treatment is to stay ahead of decay, completely avoid sugar and acids, and instruct in good home care. Unfortunately, by the time these patients are mature, they may have lost several teeth.

Continue to follow your dentist's recommendations strictly! Eat healthy, brush, floss, get frequent checkups.

The good news is that tooth replacement has come a long way and will be even more advanced by the time you are an adult. By following a healthy diet and taking care of your teeth, you will be healthier overall.

PS: This is NOT meant to be a diagnosis. Only a dentist can tell you why your teeth are like this. Just posted this so you'd understand it is not your fault you have weak enamal.
Reply:just as suggestions:

make sure you're taking a multivitamin,

find one with extra Calcium or take a Calcium supplement,

avoid anything acidic as much as possible,

brush immediately after meals,

in between meals drink only water

A lot of people spend time trying to come up with the cause for this and that. I prefer to think prevention instead. Cavities form when acids in plaque eat through your teeth. By eliminating acids from having the opportunity to linger in your mouth, you avoid cavities. Problem is, sometimes your saliva itself can be harmful and this is why it is so important to reduce your acidic levels in your body. You can do this by limiting anything acidic and by drinking water. Water is a good neutralizer.

Also, use listerine to help fight gingivitis. Just make sure you spit it out and don't swallow it!
Reply:Hey, you got a lot of good suggestions already, follow them.

I was getting a lot of fillingings in my teeth when I was around your age, but then around 21 it just stopped! My teeth stopped decaying. My dentists said my saliva content had cjanged with age and I'm no longer dissovling my teeth with my own saliva. She said it's pretty common. So hang in there, avoid sugar and soda, it gets better with age.
Reply:You would know if you had amelogenesis imperfecta, and you wouldn't be diagnosing it at 13 years old. Look for a much more likely reason than obscure causes.

Look very closely at your diet with the help of a dietitian. A diet diary is very useful.

Drink water, not juices, sodas, cordials, etc.

Are you mostly having white fillings (composite) or silver (amalgam)? Unfortunately, the white fillings in back teeth are more likely to collect plaque or leak, and hence recurrent decay is relatively common.

A chlorhexidine mouthwash used 2x daily will substantially reduce the plaque, and might be of better usefulness in stopping further decay than the toothpaste. If you continue using the high F toothpaste, spit it out at the end of brushing, but don't rinse - let the paste dissipate over the next 30 mins for maximum effect.

Crowns may be useful when you are older, but if you haven't found the cause of your decay, eliminated the cause, and stopped developing cavities, then crowns might be an expensive waste of time.
Reply:Tons of great suggestions here...one more to add....if you do eat or drink sweets, and brushing teeth is not an option, rinse mouth with water (or just drink it)....also I have heard that sugar-free chewing gum after eating can help get some of the food off of your teeth until you are able to brush....not the best advice...but will help for those times when you just can get out the brush
