Anyone else gotten bad teeth during/because of pregnancy?

I eat dairy all the time. I can go through a gallon of milk a day by myself. I eat cheese and crackers at least once a week. So I know I'm not lacking in calcium. I always had beautiful, healthy teeth my whole life...until.

Since my first pregnancy 5 years ago, my teeth have gotten awful. It seems like I have a cavity in all of my molars, and one of my molars recently broke off at the gum line. I got my wisdom teeth and they are crumbling now. I am now on my 4th pregnancy in 5 years. Could this be due to my craving Raw limes with salt through all my pregnancies?

Anyone else gotten bad teeth during/because of pregnancy?
The thing is, the fetus will rarely suffer from the mother not getting enough calcium during pregnancy. Instead, it robs the mother of the stores of calcium in her bones and teeth. I too noticed more sensitive teeth, and I know other women that say they got a cavity with every pregnancy. I would say that this is a result of you not getting/absorbing enough calcium.

By the way, elemental calcium and calcium carbonate are not very absorbable forms of calcium. Our bodies need calcium to be more ph balanced.
Reply:I too have always had perfect teeth. this is my first pregnancy and I've got cavities as well and some really bad ones.

I drink milk just like you to.. all the time.
Reply:my teeth were never good to begin with, but now they seem to be getting worse.

i was eating peanuts the other day and my tooth broke =[]
Reply:It could be-the high amounts of acid may have eroded your enamel. I am also guessing that having your children so close together, without giving your body time to replenish all the lost calcium has something to do with it as well. My SIL never had a cavity until her first pregnancy, and has gotten one with each child (preggo with number 3 right now).
Reply:Calcium is important, but other minerals are needed too - and pregnancy can drain your body of these support substances. The foetus is a greedy little creature - its needs come first (and that's the way it has to be to ensure a healthy baby) but four pregnancies in five years will definitely deplete your body. That's why most OBs suggest two years between babies - to give the mother a chance to recuperate. It's going to be even more catastrophic if you nursed each of your babies, because that also diminishes the supply of nutrients available to the mother.
Reply:yes, the babies are taking so much of your vitamins, that's why your teeth are falling apart! my teeth did the same thing and now after i've had my baby my teeth are very sensitive. it sucks!
Reply:I had perfect teeth until my first pregnancy. By the end of that pregnancy I had 3 cavities and had to have a tooth pulled. I later asked the doc why I my teeth took such a beating. Like you I made sure I wasn't lacking calcium. He surprised me when he said it was because all of my calcium was going to the baby.

I'm pregnant again and it is a huge concern for me. That being said, I go to the dentist every two months for a cleaning and a checkup and I make sure I'm taking even better care of my teeth than normal. So far so good. I'm 7 months and no cavities.
Reply:The only thing that happened to me when I was pregnant was my gums became inflammed for months. I'd suggest cutting back on the limes, if you can, since the acid doesn't help your teeth at all. And even though you seem to be drinking enough milk and eating the cheese and crackers a lot, it probably wouldn't hurt to take a calcium suppliment daily. Having 4 kids in 5 years probably has an effect on your teeth as well, as others have mentioned. I hope you find something that works for you!
Reply:ha ha lol yeah i know what u mean. before my first pregnancy i had quite healthy white teeth with the odd couple of fillings from too much sweets when younger. anyway with my first pregnancy my gums were coming away from my teeth which felt uncomfortable was given some strong mouth wash to help settle this. it went away after having my first although my teeth stopped being as white as they once were. now with this pregnancy i have developed a major sweet tooth and the other day woke up with major headaches coz i had a hole in my tooth coz of the sweet tooth. so being 26 weeks pregnant i took advantage of the free nhs dental treatment and went in for an emergency appointment. well anyway saw the dentist told him what was wrong he had a look and he said we need to take the tooth out, i though he ment after having my baby but no, it was numb and out within 10-15 minutes i have never paniked so much in all my life. anyway the anasthetic has finally worn of and i feel all swollen and bruised (i should mention it was my wisdom tooth he took out too) and im now looking on answers to answer some questions.
Reply:I never had perfect teeth, but when I got pregnant with my first child my teeth went way downhill.

I had broken teeth, massive cavities, etc...

I asked my dentist if it had anything to do with pregnancy and he said that's an old wive's tale. He said that when women reach child-bearing age that's usually about the same age your teeth start getting bad.

But I have seen too many pregnant women with tooth problems to think there's nothing at all to it.

After my 1st was born, I had perfect teeth...UNTIL I got pregnant again! Then it was the same thing...crowns and fillings all the time.

Now I have flouride treatments and I have to brush and floss a million times a day. It seems like all I do is brush and floss.

When you're pregnant your gums do have a tendency to swell, which causes bacteria to hide from your toothbrush. That can cause cavities.

Since I've been pregnant with #3 I haven't had any cavities, but then again, like, 50% of my teeth are filled or crowned...so it's hard to tell.

If you can afford it, just go to the dentist and get it fixed. Nothing sucks worse than having a toothache...except having a toothache while you're miserably pregnant.
