you can buy the ones at wal mart, but I never could sleep with those in. I finally had to shell out almost $300 to my dentist. He made me one that was very thin and wasn't very noticable in my mouth. It worked well. But then, for the price, it should have!
Reply:You need to see a dentist and your family doctor. And start drinking more milk. Most psople who grind their teeth are doing so because their diet is lacking in calcium and their body is trying to make up for it.

They do sell over the counter night guards but one that isn't made for you can cause problems with your teeth and your bite. It's much better to see a dentist and get a professional opinion before spending your money.
Reply:i have the exact same problem (even in the left ear!) Started about 8 years ago and has progressively gotten worse. I finally broke down and decided to talk to a dentist about it. He made me a mouth splint (cost about $300 or so... i think insurance covered 1/2.) I started using it about 9 months ago, only wear it while I sleep and I have noticed a huge difference! (no more grinding and a lot less "ear"pain!)

If this problem is just starting you could try the cheap mouth piece that they sell at Target or whatever, but if that doesn't help you'll need to see your dentist.

good luck! i feel for you, tmj is absolutely no fun!
Reply:Grinding your teeth while you sleep (or medically called Bruxism) could mean you are going through some sort of stress. I had this issue and after seeing a doctor, he stated that most people gind their teeth because they are going through some sort of stress in their life which was actually the case for me.

I went to my dentist and he gave me a mouthguard to help prevent the damage that can be caused by grinding.

I would not recommend buying an over the counter remedy as they are not as durable as the one you get from the dentist.

Think I provided tells you more about teeth grinding or "Bruxism".
Reply:You need to go to your dentist and he will fit you with a mouthpiece to wear at night to keep you from grinding your teeth. The pain you are feeling behind your ear is called Temporal/Mandible Joint syndrome and you may have to see a regular doctor for that problem.
Reply:Get yourself to a dentist as soon as possible and have him or her examine you and fit you with a bite guard to stop you from doing this. Then, I would strongly recommend that you start seeing a counselor so you can talk about whatever may be bothering you. The number one cause of bruxism, which is the medical name for teeth grinding, is stress. TMJ syndrome DOES NOT cause bruxism- it is the result of it. Most bruxism occurs at night when people are asleep, and for that reason, it is sometimes considered to be a sleep disorder. At any rate, you need to see a dentist immediately for some pain relief, and get yourself to a counselor as well so you can sort out the issues in your life which are causing you so much stress. Good luck, I hope this helps.
