Is it really true that most peple from England have bad teeth?

I have always heard this stereotype. I am sure that people that are poor probably have bad teeth, just like here in the US, but is this really true of most upper to middle class?

Is it really true that most peple from England have bad teeth?
To some extent it is true. I read the british government reduced or stopped funding to dentistry schools after fluoride was put in the water because they thought noone would need dentists anymore. So there aren't many qualified dentists in England therefore not enough to meet demand. There are long waiting lists to get to see a dentist and most people don't go at all except for an emergency. I've heard someone literally has to die before a place becomes available. So it's not that they don't care about their teeth, it's just hard to get an appointment. Assuming what I read was true. But it was a newspaper not something on the net so it's probably at least based in fact.
Reply:all that tea has alot of acidity .... eats um right out of the head ..
Reply:Yes, according to Jay Leno. He's always making cracks about that.
Reply:maybe there is a english person on here who could tell us
Reply:No.
Reply:No...what a stupid question.
Reply:I would think that maybe the US has way more cosmetic dentistry...

I'm American and I know plenty of ppl who have nice-looking teeth, but underneath all of the dental work they have a lot of problems.

Usually the ppl with the best-looking smiles have veneers or caps covering up the nasty truth!

That being said, on the cosmetic angle we probably do care more for our teeth, because it is the fashion here. (lots of brushing, flossing, whitening)
Reply:Yes they do tea makes you weak but makes you live long look at David Beckham without a tea he is an athlete, heres the answer Americans are better than England no matter what people post in this question. Thats not offensive thats just a compliment. Viva La Filipina!
Reply:This started back in the Victorian era in England when it was discovered that rinsing your mouth with urine whitened the teeth. No one knew why but it was a common practice with the Royalty. Then it was discovered that it was the ammonia in the urine that did the whitening, as a bleaching agent. Dentists started to bleach the teeth of the aristocrats ,it was very expensive to have this done, so only the elites were able. Ironically, the ammonia bleach also stripped the teeth of it's enamel causing massive decay. This is how the story of the English having bad teeth began.
Reply:Basically an average Britian is OK with teeth that might be crooked, stained, even slightly rotten, if they aren't causing discomfort to their owner. Most Americans have higher standards in the state of their dental health and feel that good teeth are a wise investment in looks and health.

Visits to the dentist by Britians occur only after something has gone wrong their teeth, while Americans take a proactive approach with checkups before any problems become worse.
Reply:Yes, they all have big ears and noses too.
Reply:The vanity of Americans means that many more people have excellent teeth in the USA. It is not as common practice in other countries to be so obsessed with looks and get braces and bleaching and such. Dental care is not covered by one's employer either, so each person has to pay out of their own pocket, unless they are very poor in which case they get free basic care (almost opposite to America).

I do think that they may be something to the whole bad-teeth thing anyway though. I have noticed from my stays in the UK that people in Australia have better teeth. I can only imagine that part of this may be that we have had fluoridated water for much longer than most countries. I also suspect that different ways of speaking can mean different development of your plate, which can lead to overcrowding. Since Australians tend to move their mouths more when speaking, I wonder if this makes the palette a little broader or something?

Reply:Yeah, baby, yeah. Most brits do have bad choppers, I say, most definitely. Too much kidney pudding, i guesses. Oh, well, talks to ya later mater.
